W14 Reflection: Entrepreneurial Journal Final Blog

o   If you had one final lecture to share with a group of students on what you have learned from this course, what would you share?
    • I have loved learning about the way successful people organize their business, in the sense of putting God first and also how they serve. With the companies and CEO’s I’ve studied this semester, almost all of them have figured out the way to true success is service and putting God and family first. It is rare in today’s world for people to really show their religion and to be selfless, but I loved studying the why behind these successful people and how they figured it out.

o   What would be your last bit of advice to someone wanting to begin the entrepreneur journey?
    • To have a good idea. To think about it, get advice from friends and family! Find something you’re passionate about. But most of all, to just do it! The scary part is just getting out there and getting started. As a photographer, I had to start out taking pictures for free to show people what I could do first. But, I had to start somewhere! Also, to study your competition. I love seeing what other photographers are doing with their business and how they sell themselves.

o   What words of advice, direction or caution would you give him or her if you had only one chance to give your own last lecture?
    • One caution I would throw out there is to not be a “fauxtographer”. Set yourself apart from those who think they’re photographers. Find what makes your work unique, and work with that. Study photography, go to workshops, and become an exceptionally good photographer in your field. For example, I have recently realized I love taking pictures of kids and babies a lot more than weddings. For my specialty, I focus on family pictures and babies. But, I have a photographer friend who specializes in destination weddings and loves to travel, so if someone wants me to shoot a wedding I refer them to her instead. Supporting other businesses brings the best feeling.

In President Monson’s talk, An Attitude of Gratitude, he mentioned the story of the 10 lepers. To me, this story is the perfect example of showing gratitude and why we should show gratitude. I’ve been thinking of the 9 lepers, and how they didn’t show gratitude. I mean, how could they not?? Christ healed them, and only one had the thought to go back and show thanks. Then, I thought about my own life and moments I might not have or should have shown gratitude. I wonder, what are some ways we can better show gratitude in our lives? One way I thought of, is to keep a gratitude journal. For me, keeping a record of a gratitude journal could help me look back on my day and look for those moments that I normally wouldn’t. Even if I had the worst day, showing gratitude that I am breathing could be a start. I love how President Monson continues to talk about showing gratitude towards mothers. Sometimes, motherhood can feel like such a thankless job. Being pregnant and finishing school this semester has been hard on me, and I am more than ready to be done! But, as mothers, we would do anything to bring these sweet babies into the world, even if that means going to school at the same time. Fathers also sacrifice so much, so they can provide for their families. I think about my husband and all the work and studying he is doing to provide for our family. I know I can be better at showing my gratitude to my husband, and doing that with our kids so they can see how I show gratitude as well. Being that example for our kids and showing them how I show gratitude is important and necessary, so they will know and learn how to as well.

W12 Reflection: Entrepreneurial Journal

·       Based on what you read in the first two pages (pages 3 and 4), why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy?
- Without virtue and integrity, people become selfish. According to Europeans, American executives are selfish and greedy. Where has virtue and integrity gone? Have we all really gotten so selfish to the point where we aren’t grateful for what we have? People tend to not trust CEO’s, and why is that? Is it because of greed? If integrity and virtue goes down, then the economy goes with it.
·       According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the existence of businesses?
- For a business, their goal is to not only make a profit to live off of, but to comfortably live. The sad part, is that investors don’t care.
·       What are two solutions proposed by Handy that you agree with? Why?
